Cameroon and Nigeria will meet for a record 14th time at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations when the archrivals face off in a highly anticipated 2026 quarterfinal in Morocco.
The two neighbours have crossed paths at almost every stage of the competition, with Nigeria holding a dominant record of nine wins in open play and two victories on penalties. Cameroon have managed just one win, while one encounter ended in a draw. Their famous victory came in 2012, when Gaelle Enganamouit’s goal secured a 1-0 win.
Cameroon enter the quarterfinals as underdogs but with growing confidence. The Indomitable Lionesses topped Group D with seven points after victories over Mali and Ghana, followed by a draw against Cabo Verde. They scored four goals and conceded only twice.
Coach Valentine Nguele acknowledges Nigeria’s status as favourites but believes his team can cause an upset by playing without pressure and enjoying the occasion.
Nigeria, meanwhile, arrive with an incredible WAFCON record, having won a record 10 titles from 13 editions. The Super Falcons have also reached the semifinals on 13 occasions and are targeting a 14th appearance in the last four.
Nigeria scored nine goals in the group stage, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade contributing two. Six of their goals came in the second half, highlighting their ability to finish matches strongly.
Coach Justine Madugu insists Nigeria will not be distracted by recent friendly results against Cameroon, while midfielder Toni Payne says the team remains confident, hungry and focused on securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The stakes are enormous. Victory would send Cameroon into their 11th WAFCON semifinal, while Nigeria would extend their record of World Cup appearances to 10.
